French quantum computing startup Quobly<\/a> said on Wednesday it has raised \u20ac115 million ($133.72 million) in a funding round led by \u200bFrance’s state-backed investment bank Bpifrance, chipmaker STMicroelectronics and Sealsq .<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The funding follows \u200ca wave of public investment in quantum computing<\/a> in the U.S. and Europe. French President Emmanuel Macron last month said France will invest \u20ac1 billion in quantum computing, a day \u200bafter U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration announced $2 billion in funding for \u200bthe technology. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Quantum computers can in theory solve problems in chemistry, biotechnology \u2060and cybersecurity that would take conventional machines thousands of years.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

However, the current \u200bgeneration of quantum computers is less reliable and stable than those using conventional \u200bsemiconductors, which have had more than half a century of iterative refinement.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Quobly aims to make cheap, reliable quantum machines with quantum chips that use modified transistors, the same devices \u200bthat power conventional computers, adopting a similar approach used by other startups.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

“We benefit \u200bfrom the economy of scale of this industry,” said Maud Vinet, CEO and co-founder of \u200cQuobly<\/strong>. “The \u2060cost of producing our chip leads us to design quantum computers that will be a 100 times cheaper than competing technologies.”<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Quobly is working closely with STMicroelectronics to manufacture its chips, with a team of about 15 people \u200bworking inside the chipmaker.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Vinet \u200bsaid the company \u2060needs the consistent and repeatable results of a large chipmaker’s factories.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

“It requires the yield and the quality of fabrication \u200bof commercial fabs,” Vinet said. “We needed an agreement with \u200bthis commercial \u2060fab to exchange the learning of what it is that is needed to optimize the technology.”<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Quobly plans to allow cloud-based access to its first systems at \u2060its \u200bGrenoble, France headquarters later this year.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
