South Korea’s Rebellions<\/a> said on Monday it had raised $400 \u200cmillion in its latest funding round, valuing the artificial intelligence chip<\/a> startup at about $2.34 billion as it accelerates expansion into the U.S.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Rebellions said the round, led by Mirae Asset Financial Group and the Korea National Growth \u200bFund, follows a $250 million Series C in September and brings its total capital raised \u200bto $850 million.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Rebellions said it was entering a new phase of growth, focused \u2060on expanding in the U.S., scaling up its Rebel100 platform and preparing for an IPO.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Founded \u200bin 2020, Rebellions designs neural processing units for AI inference. It said demand for efficient AI \u200binfrastructure was rising rapidly across cloud providers, telecom operators and government-backed initiatives, particularly in the U.S.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

It plans to use the proceeds to speed up its chip design plans, add new chips to its product roadmap and \u200bexpand its team.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The company’s goal is to export “domestic success in Korea to global markets, to \u200bbuild out AI sovereignty and large-scale inference,” Rebellions Chief Business Officer Marshall Choy<\/strong> told Reuters in an interview \u200con \u2060Monday.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Rebellions’ focus for its chips revolves around achieving the best performance for the least amount of energy, Choy said.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

It chose to focus there because the major AI battleground has moved from the large models that power chatbots such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT to \u200bthe infrastructure supporting it, \u200bhe said.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Korea National \u2060Growth Fund provided 250 billion won ($165.45 million) in the latest round, the first\u00a0direct investment\u00a0by the government under its “K-Nvidia” initiative.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

This project aims to nurture \u200ba globally competitive chip company amid intensifying competition in a sector \u200bdominated by U.S. \u2060firms such as Nvidia.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The Rebellions funding round underscores growing investor interest in companies developing alternatives to dominant AI chipmakers, as demand for cost-efficient and deployable AI systems increases globally.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Rebellions’ investors include Aramco’s\u00a0\u2060Wa’ed Ventures, \u200bArm, KT, Samsung, SK Hynix\u00a0and SK Telecom. It \u200bis headquartered in South Korea and operates in the United States.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
