There are ten breakthrough innovations highlighted in the report that have the potential to reshape society over the next five years. The report also presents a strategic outlook on each of these technologies. It profoundly shares an insight into what they could become and what will be necessary to achieve their potential.
Over 250 valid technology nominations were submitted by experts across industry and academia in 2025. AI Trend Analyzer, developed by Frontiers, mapped nominations to key concepts and compared them to their frequency in academic articles over a rolling 10-year period.
The Catalyst picks 5 of the most impressive technologies highlighted in the World Economic Forum’s Technology 2025 report.
Generative Watermarking
Artificial intelligence watermarking technologies embed invisible markers in AI-generated content – including text, images, audio, and video – to verify authenticity and trace the origin of the content.
AI-generated content has become increasingly difficult to distinguish from content created without AI. As a result, innovative watermarking technologies147 have been developed to fight misinformation, protect intellectual property, combat academic dishonesty, and promote trust in digital content.
Engineered Living Therapeutics Microbes
A personalized treatment at the cellular level using engineered microbes that live inside you. Engineered living therapeutics are advanced probiotic systems – such as microbes, cells and fungi developed to produce therapeutic substances like drugs, enzymes and hormones in a controlled and sustainable manner. Production within the patient promises to overcome the crucial shortcomings of conventional medications. This includes avoiding frequent injections, as in diabetes treatment.
Collaborative Sensing
Nowadays, people’s homes, vehicles, and workplaces are filled with sensing devices. While these distributed sensors are already useful in isolation, they are increasingly connected to each other and integrated into artificial intelligence systems. Consequently, it will pave the way for rapid advancements in collaborative sensing that may provide insights into improving the capabilities of individual sensors.
Besides autonomous urban mobility, collaborative sensing has a variety of promising applications, including perceptive mobile networks that combine communications and sensing. The use of collaborative sensing will change the way that cities operate as well as how organizations utilize information to make decisions. There are many potential applications for collaborative sensing, including improving urban mobility. For example, connected traffic lights can dynamically adjust themselves based on traffic cameras and environmental sensors to reduce urban congestion and pollution.
Advanced Nuclear Technologies
There has been an increase in energy demand as a result of the rapid development of electrified transportation, emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, and a push for decarbonization. To meet the increased loads, global power grids must grow while maintaining reliability, resiliency, and affordability.
In response to the demand for green energy options, nuclear energy is experiencing a renewed wave of technological innovation. A trend is also emerging towards reducing the scale of power plants by manufacturing key components in a factory and then transporting them to the site.
GLP-1s for Neurodegenerative Disease
A recent class of drugs originally developed for type 2 diabetes and obesity management – technically known as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) – is now being explored for its potential in treating neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. If proven effective in treating Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, GLP-1s could have tremendous global economic impact.
With over 55 million people living with dementia, the global market for GLP-1 drugs is projected to grow to $55.7 billion by 2031.59. Similarly, the emotional and monetary costs associated with caring for and treating those living with these diseases would dramatically decrease.
Powering The Future
This shift towards advanced nuclear technologies, combined with enhanced renewable energy strategies and improved energy storage solutions, underscores the global urgency of transitioning away from fossil fuels. This is essential to securing a sustainable, zero-carbon future.
Even as the world tracks emerging technologies, the goal remains the same: to provide a forward-looking perspective. It looks forward to bridging the gap between scientific potential and practical implementation.
The report serves as an excellent illustration of how breakthrough technologies are built upon foundational innovations to create disruptions and re-designs of entire societal ecosystems.
