The true power of technology lies in its ability to enable this regeneration. By using data and smart design, we can integrate nature into the very fabric of our buildings. Nature-positive design is no longer a luxury. It is an essential strategy for urban survival. When we integrate green roofs that mitigate the urban heat island effect or permeable surfaces that allow rainwater to recharge aquifers, we are using technology to mimic natural systems.
Circular Urbanism: Building New from Old
Achieving this vision requires moving away from the linear take-make-waste model. Cities should be viewed as urban mines, rich reservoirs of materials that can be continuously repurposed. By embracing circularity, construction and demolition materials can be recycled into high-performance building solutions, conserving natural resources and preserving landscapes.
At Holcim, circularity is embedded into how cities are built through ECOCycle® technology. A flagship example is Recygénie in Paris, the world’s first social housing complex built with 100 percent recycled concrete, saving more than 6,000 tons of natural resources. Smart design supports this approach by using advanced material science to achieve higher structural strength with lower material intensity. When we design for deconstruction from the outset, every building component can eventually be returned to the cycle, eliminating the concept of waste entirely.

Enabling this future is not a task for any single entity. No one company, no matter how innovative its solutions, can build a regenerative city alone. Collaboration across policymakers, developers, architects, designers, and contractors is essential to scale meaningful change.
