Khazna, the UAE’s largest data centre operator, has signed an agreement with Italian oil giant Eni to jointly develop a 500-megawatt AI data campus in northern Italy.

The project is part of a partnership between Italy and the UAE launched in February aimed at installing up to 1 gigawatt of IT capacity in the European country.

The campus in Erbognone, Lombardy, will be fed by “blue power”, which Eni describes as a low-carbon electricity source generated by a high efficiency gas power plant that is built to capture CO2 emissions.

Eni says the design of the centre is based on scalable, high-performance computing and energy-efficient infrastructure.

The agreement sets out the key principles, roles and governance structure of the joint centre, though no financial details were given.

Guido Brusco, COO of global natural resources at Eni, said the joint venture will deliver a hyperscale infrastructure strategy for Italy and Europe. Hyperscale refers to the ability of a computational architecture to scale appropriately as increased demand is added to the system.
