Today, India marks National Startup Day, celebrating a decade of startups, not just as economic engines, but as enduring symbols of innovation-led growth. The movement has had a transformative impact on the entrepreneurial and innovation ecosystem in India, which aligns with India’s vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.

As engines of economic transformation, startups are facilitating technological innovation and productivity, providing large-scale employment opportunities, enhancing financial inclusion, and promoting grassroots entrepreneurship.

According to government data, more than 200,000 startups have been officially recognised under the programme, spanning sectors such as technology, manufacturing, healthcare and services.

Policy Support and Ecosystem Enablement

The Prime Minister highlighted that this day is about celebrating the courage, spirit of innovation, and entrepreneurial zeal of the people, especially the youth, who have powered India’s rise in the global StartUp ecosystem.

In addition to Startup India, sector-specific initiatives have strengthened the ecosystem, including the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), which emphasizes vernacular innovation centers, frontier programs for the Northeast and Jammu and Kashmir, as well as deep-tech commercialization.

The Prime Minister further noted that the Government of India has been working with all stakeholders to strengthen the StartUp ecosystem. He underlined that the Reform Express embarked upon by India has created a conducive atmosphere for StartUps to venture into areas previously unthinkable, including space and defence.

Deep Tech, AI, and the Next Growth Frontier

Additionally, a Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY)-led deep-tech platform, GENESIS, was launched in 2022 to scale 1,600 startups in Tier-II/III cities with Rs. 490 crore funding. Technology Incubation and Development of Entrepreneurs (TIDE) 2.0 Scheme catalyses Information and Communication Technology-driven entrepreneurship in areas like healthcare, agriculture, and clean tech.

“We have 120 to 150 tech startup unicorns in India today. Easily, in the next three to five years, over half of new unicorns will be AI unicorns coming out of India,” said Seema Rao, Managing Director, Top Partners India & Corporate Development at Google.

She was speaking at the AI Startups Conclave held on Thursday, January 15, a pre-summit event ahead of the upcoming Global AI Impact Summit organised in partnership with Startup India and the India AI Mission.

From Scale to Sustainability

Another feather in this cap is the National Initiative for Developing and Harnessing Innovations (NIDHI) from the Department of Science and Technology, which has generated 1.3 lakh jobs, supported over 12,000 startups, and backed more than 175 incubators.

Corporates and multinationals are increasingly collaborating with Indian startups to facilitate technology transfer and global market integration. In view of India’s projected $7.3 trillion economy by 2030, startups are expected to remain a key pillar of its development trajectory.

There has been a shift in the government’s focus from rapid expansion to sustainable scale and deeper integration with the real economy. A decade later, India’s startup ecosystem reflects not just growth in numbers, but the emergence of a confident, innovation-driven economy.
